Postal History of the Logan Region
The Logan region has a fascinating postal history dating back to the mid-19th century, when Queensland was still a young colony. These early post offices served remote farming communities and played a vital role in connecting settlers to the wider world.
Our society takes particular interest in preserving and studying the postal history of our local area. Below are three notable examples of early post offices in the region.
Beenleigh Post Office
Beenleigh's post office was established in 1867, making it one of the earliest postal facilities in the Logan region. Named after the Beenleigh plantation owned by the Bell family, the town grew rapidly as a centre for sugar cane farming.
The early Beenleigh postmarks are highly sought after by collectors specialising in Queensland postal history. The first post office was a simple timber structure, reflecting the frontier nature of the colony at that time.
Historical Highlights:
- First postmaster: John Davy (1867)
- Connected to Brisbane via horse-drawn mail coach
- Served sugar cane farmers and timber workers
- Telegraph service added in 1873

Bethania Post Office
Bethania's postal service began in 1885, serving a community largely comprised of German immigrants who had settled in the area during the 1860s and 1870s. The town's name comes from the biblical village of Bethany.
The German heritage of the area is reflected in some of the early correspondence, with letters often written in German and addressed to relatives in Europe. These covers provide a unique window into immigrant life in colonial Queensland.
Historical Highlights:
- Served the German Lutheran community
- Important link for immigrant correspondence
- Originally operated from a general store
- Mail delivered twice weekly from Beenleigh
Bethania connected German settlers to their homeland
Browns Plains Post Office
Browns Plains received its first post office in 1872, named after the Brown family who were early settlers in the area. Initially a rural outpost serving scattered farming properties, the area has since grown into one of Logan's major population centres.
Early Browns Plains postal history reflects the agricultural character of the region, with correspondence often relating to farming matters, livestock sales, and land transactions. The post office also served as a community meeting point.
